Daphnia’s maneuvers in the dark | by Motic Europe

Like many other crustaceans, water fleas are very sensitive to light. They have a light-sensitive organ called Ocellus, with which they can swim in the direction of the light.
In the video we see a water flea in a Petri dish. It is surprising to see how actively the water flea reacts to light.

Ian Wilson : This is lovely but surely we moved on from the "part animal, part plant" stuff 40 years ago. They are neither of the kingdom animal or the kingdom plantae. The fact that they are neither is much more interesting than perpetuating old out-dated beliefs. I expect more up to date scientific accuracy from Motic!
Read up Adl et al. 2005, 2007, 2012 and 2018 all freely available for download on the web. It's fascinating stuff :-)
Motic Europe : Dear Ian, different point of view is always welcomed! As you said the relationship between the macro and microworld is fascinating, and our aim is to offer the opportunity to observe some of these amazing organisms close together with little touches of knowledge. However, we appreciate your feedback, and we take note! Thank you for your comments
Ian Wilson :  @Motic Europe  Thanks for your reply, I take your point and accept that I am being a bit pedantic. BUT - when there is an opportunity to let people know that much of the biodiversity of the world isn't plants or animals but is made up of extraordinary organisms which are neither plants or animals and which often predate both - well it seems a shame to miss the opportunity to mention that :-)
The advances in understanding of taxonomy of single celled organisms have been extraordinary and the basics of how animals and plants and fungi are just three branches of very very many is not beyond the understanding of amateurs - so I hope that, in future episodes, you might address some modern thoughts about the fascinating relationships between the macro and micro worlds. All the best, Ian
Motic Europe : Dear Ian, we love that you like our new Microdocumentary! As you know, our content is destined to amateur scientists, curious people about the microworld, etc. We just caress the knowledge surface of some of complex ecosystems of our world. In this case, it is just to highlight the mixotrophic capability of Euglena algae.
Thank you for your comment!
